Uhler's Sundragon
Helocordulia uhleri
Selys, 1871
Order Odonata
Suborder Anisoptera
Superfamily Libelluloidea
Family Corduliidae
Genus Helocordulia
Species uhleri (Selys, 1871) [Cordulia]
Identification
This uncommon species is similar to the preceding one, but Uhler's Sundragon has a small amber spot adjacent to the dark
er basal spot in each wing. Its range is more restricted within the south-central United States.
Size
Total length: 41-46 mm; abdomen: 28-33 mm; hindwing: 25-30 mm.
Similar Species
Differences between Selys' Sundragon are given above and under the description for that species along with differences between other species.
Habitat
Small, rapid forest streams, often with impeded flow, and occasionally lakes.
Discussion
One author said this species "...is inconspicuous and flies with great speed, within two or three feet of the water, following the shore line closely." This species has only rarely been reported from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Uhler's Sundragon was reported from Louisiana, but it was later determined that all specimens were actually Selys' Sundragon, and the Louisiana records can probably be attributed to the past confusion in separating these two species.
Distribution
Widespread, eastern U.S. and Canada.
