Decision Notes We believe this record to be in error. This record, and the other dotmap record of Nehallenia irene for South Carolina, trace back to individuals collected by Henry Townes in 1933. Townes’s records were published by Montgomery in 1940 (Montgomery, E. 1940. The Odonata of South Carolina. Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Society 56:283-301). But Montgomery himself did not examine the specimens. Townes wrote, of records of various species that he communicated to Montgomery "I have quite a few [records]...These specimens were determined by myself, Williamson, Gloyd and Needham. I believe they are all accurate." The Montgomery publication was the basis for the inclusion in White and Tennessen's 1983 publication (White, T. R., K. J. Tennessen, R. C. Fox, and P. H. Carlson. 1983. The aquatic insects of South Carolina Part II: Zygoptera (Odonata). Bulletin of the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station 648:1-72.). I believe White and Tennessen 1983 was the basis for including this record in the dot map publications. But it all traces back to a 1933 collection, not necessarily vetted by anyone other than the collector, and way out of the normal species range, and at a time when the occurrence of this species was much worse understood.
